Possible Re-injured ACLpreviously repaired with buckling of the knee

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had reconstructive surgery with prp on my right ACL July 1, 2010. Around 6 months later my knee gave out after I jumped and landed while I was playing basketball; even while I wore my brace. There was a huge bump on the side of my knee from the inflammation and I had x-rays but they came back negative. It took a about a month or so to heal and continue normal walking and running activities. Now, I can buckle my knee on command when I move it inward or when I cut a certain way or walk down the stairs it randomly buckles as well. Depending on how hard it buckles I'll have pain, swelling and very tight muscles. I am thinking I have either re-torn the ACL or caused more damage to my menisci. I want to play football next season and practices start in January but I feel like the buckling of my knee will prevent me from being able to play without re-injuring it. What is your suggestion that I do so it is possible for me to play again.
Dear Trevor: I strongly recommend you getting a revaluation by an Orthopedic surgeon specialized in knee, because plain X-rays are not enough, you possibly will need and MRI to assess the injury in detail and see if the ACL is re-injured and if there is a meniscus lesion associated. Depending of the evaluation, that includes meticulous physical exam and imaging studies (MRI) your doctor will decide what the best treatment option in your case is. |
