Treatment of Anterior Talofibular Ligament Injury

Dear Ask The Doctor: Ultrasounds shows complete disruption of the anterior talo-fibular ligament what does this mean and how do i fix it ?

Dear Jess: The anterior talofibular ligament connects two bones in the ankle, the talus and the fibula. Its role is to stabilize the anterior portion of the ankle. Complete disruption of the ligament means that it is completely torn.

Treatment involves rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE therapy) along with anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy rehabilitation. You will also need an ankle brace. If this conservative therapy fails then surgery is considered.
