Could duplex kidneys cause excessive hormone production? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My husband has bilateral duplex kidneys and all four are fully functioning. He is only thirty one tall and slim, and no major health problems. His BP has been gradually increasing over three years. He has severe mood swings and OCD. If he has four adrenal glands instead of two could he have excessive hormone production which may explain these issues Dear Leondra: I understand your doubt about duplex kidney and probable multiple suprarenal glands. As you may already know, a duplex kidney is one which is split into two separate units, each with its own ureter (ureteric duplication). Duplex kidneys can be present on one or both sides. Having double adrenal glands per side is not commonly found, on top of that, hormonal production is regulated by a feedback mechanism to keep the levels within the range. In my opinion, I would focus more in testing the functionality of the kidneys to rule out possible cause of hypertension. Once this is ruled out completely, follow up with an endocrinologist to look for secondary causes of hypertension is granted. I wish him a prompt recovery. In the meantime, avoid salty foods and smoking. |
