Lead: How Long Can it Stay in the Body?

Dear Ask The Doctor: If you had lead poisoning since you was a baby would you still have it in your system
Yes, it is possible. Lead is being removed very slowly from the blood through the urine. In the blood, it can be cleared in a matter of weeks but it can stay in the bones, teeth, and hair for months or years. Presence of lead on these body parts are insignificant and considered harmless. Lead poisoning in children have more serious long term effects because children are not as efficient in getting rid of lead compared to adults. If you had lead poisoning as a child, I believe it may be very low or undetectable in your blood by now. I do hope I have answered your question. |
