Tranmission of AIDS

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is it possible for a man with AIDS to have sex with someone multiple times, impregnant the significant other, and both mom and baby test negative for the virus?

Dear St: AIDS is caused by HIV virus the main route of transmission being sexual contact , from infected needle and syringes and from mother to the child , but what we should remember is for the transmission of the virus it should come in contact with internal body fluids of the susceptible individual. There is exhaustive data providing probabilities of transmission during sexual contacts and different sexual practices , during needle injuries, mother to child transmission during birth and during blood transfusion and the bottom line is virus can be transmitted in first contact and may not be transmitted on multiple sexual contacts and also chances of transmission are more to child during normal vaginal delivery than with caesarian section. Precaution is the key word as more we indulge in practices and habits known to transmit the disease the more we expose ourselves to the risk of getting the infection.
