83 year old on lovenox and cumiden

Dear Ask The Doctor: My grandfather was just admitted to th hospital yesterday. He is 83 years old and recently had blood clots in both legs the doctor put him on lovenox and cumiden. he hasnt taken lovenox in 11 days and the cumiden in 3 days. over the last 4 days he has become very confused and doesnt know where he is or whats going on. he also hasnt been eating at all for the last month. He also in the last 4 days has been wetting himself. they did a CAT scan on his head yesterday and everything was good. his blood work came back good except his hemoglobin was 10 and they said was supposed to be 14 and he was a little dehydrated. The doctors are having trouble finding out what is wrong with him please let me know if you have any sugestions because something is very wrong up till this point he was a very active 83 year old man.

Dear Ryan: This is something very hard to evaluate without seeing your grandfather in person as there are so many variables in people around his age. The good thing is that the CAT scan showed nothing. The only thing in older people is sometimes when they come off of drugs such as lovenox and cumiden is that they have a little bit of withdrawls. I hope he does get better soon and my advice is to keep visiting the doctors in person. Hope this helps.
