Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello Doctor, I'm Jason and I'm 17 years old. Recently, I've been experiencing a weird problem. This problem is unknown to me but has happened my entire life. Internet research has told me that my illness is called the panic attack or anxiety attack, however i dont think it is that simple, and i believe it might be something more serious. These ''Panic'' attacks happen to me when I'm sleeping, it never happens when i'm awake. The symptoms would be : Great unimaginable sense of fear, intense confusion, feel like I'm in another dimension, lost contact with reality, increased heart beat, changes in sight (things start to change in size, like it becomes bigger, then smaller, then bigger again), shouting voices in head, feeling of helplessness, and doing things that I'm not aware of. These attacks are so traumatic, i can't sleep properly anymore, because of the constant fear of another attack. Everynight, i would force myself to think of something else before i sleep. The trauma is taking over my life, i feel scared of it almost everytime. I couldn't smile anymore. When the sun sets, i feel even more anxious. I dread the sight of the moon. I am living in pain, and almost going insane. Will you help me?
Dear Jason: I do understand your concern for the symptoms you are experiencing. By definition a panic attack is a discrete period of intense terror or discomfort in which specific symptoms develop abruptly and reach a peak within 10 minutes. These symptoms range from shortness of breath, chest pain, chills, choking sensation to fear of dying, losing control or going crazy. You need to speak with your family doctor in person about this and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist. Supportive psychotherapy, desensitization techniques and medications like benzodiazepines are usually helpful to decrease the symptoms. .In the mean time try doing some yoga and practicing relaxation techniques on your own. |
