Dear Ask The Doctor: I just had a panic attack over the weekend, and iv'e been struggling with my OCD for years now. I'm finally going to a psychiatrist to see what they can do for my anxiety and all my problems. What medications would they be giving me? (just typing right now and thinking about ocd makes me nervous, right now i have a sense of nervousness, like im typing this in front of 30 people starring at me.......i cant handle this shit anymore, honestly. What are the medications that would help me?)
Dear Sterling: Panic attacks and panic disorder are common problems with someone suffering from OCD. Symptoms often include chest pain or shortness of breath. Panic attacks are not usually difficult to diagnose, but you will require to consult a psychiatrist to determine other underlying comorbidities, such as agoraphobia or depression. Treatment of panic disorder varies depending upon the stage of development of the disorder. There are various medications that can be given for panic disorder. SSRIs are the first-line medication for panic disorder which includes fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline and fluoxetine. Other medications include Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) and Benzodiazepines. Treatment with the combination of Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and antidepressants has shown a small advantage over CBT or antidepressants individually. I hope the information helps, take care. |
