Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been having problems with anxiety and depression for the last couple of years and Im not sure what to do about it. I have severe generalized anxiety and panic attacks which severely interferes with my daily life, as a result I rarely leave my house. I also have pretty bad depression and have a complete lack of energy and motavation, and insomnia. These problems are really hindering my life and holding me back from making something of my self. I dont know what to do-I have been to the doctor a couple of times but nothing seemed to help and I have no insurance so I really cant afford it. I have had my thryoid checked and all the other basic tests. Is there any recomended treatment or medication for a problem like this so next time I go to my doctor I can tell her what I want to try.
Dear Ashley: To minimize your anxiety, try doing meditation and yoga, even at home. Exercising stimulates neurotransmitters to release serotonin, which can help ease depression and anxiety. This way, you can get preoccupied and the good benefits it will have on your mind and body will be countless. You can also talk to your doctor regarding psychotherapy; this is usually the initial treatment for depression. There are a number of medications out there for depression. Cipralex (escitalopram) is one of the anti-depressants with minimal side effects. Fluoxetine is also one of the popular ones since it is long acting hence can be taken less frequently. These two are examples of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors); side effects are less but some still experience decreased libido, stomach upset, headaches, etc. Bupropion is used in those who want to maintain sexual function. Trazodone can be used for those who have problems with sleep (insomnia) because it is very sedating. In general, all antidepressants are equally effective but the side effect profile is also considered a major factor because patients will stop taking it if side effects are disturbing. I do hope I have answered your question and I wish you well always. |
