Ruptured appendix - What is the management?

Dear Ask The Doctor: How long should i wait before having surgery to remove burst appendix, doctors only treated me with antibiotics? i been experiancing some pain, and i been told to go back to work which my work involves heavy lifting. i'm very worried. thank you,

Dear Adnan: A ruptured appendix may lead to significant infection of the abdominal cavity resulting in peritonitis. This is a serious complication which requires aggressive treatment in the form of intravenous fluids and intravenous antibiotics. However your symptoms do not suggest of a ruptured appendix. There are only a few indications for surgical removal of the appendix, there is a possibility that the inflamed appendix may resolve after antibiotics. However, should you develop right lower abdominal pain accompanied by vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite and a fever then you may require immediate medical attention.
