Skin discoloration around surgical site

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had my appendix taken out and one of the cuts was in my belly button. Underneath the area my skin has turned an orangey color and is tender to the touch. Is this something I need to have checked before my post op appointment in a week?

Dear Mellisa: It seems the area of skin may be inflammed which suggest a possible wound infection. These are not difficult to treat and usually resolve with a course of antibiotics which your surgeon will prescibe.
