Dear Ask The Doctor: My older brother (52) has just had a ruptured appendix operated on, and has since been diagnosed with Peritonitis. He is presently now having limited movement in his left leg, and his right hand has become significantly weaker, all while awaiting further treatment for the Peritonitis. 3 years ago he had his Spleen removed. What are possible reasons for the slight paralysis and weakening of muscles post Appendectomy with Peritonitis complications. Dear Gary: Your brother suffered a ruptured appendix. When this complication of appendicitis occurs it usually leads to significant infection of the abdominal cavity. This infection and inflammation of the abdominal tissues is called peritonitis. This is a serious complication which requires agressive treatment in the form of intravenous fluids and intravenous anitibiotics.The weakness your in the limbs that he is presently experiencing could be symptoms of a stroke. It is not uncommon for persons who are as ill as your brother to develop such a complication especially if they have other illness such as Diabetes or Hypertension. I am certain the doctors who are caring for your brother are investigating this possiblity to explain his weakness. |
