Dear Ask The Doctor:My husband had an emergency appendectomy on Sept. 3, 2010. The following morning about 8 am he got up to go to the bathroom and blood began to pour out of the laparoscopic incisions. He was taken back into surgery for a corrective operation where they said an artery they had cauterized didn't hold. He ended up with 2 transfusions and 5 day stay in the hospital. When released his hemoglobin had dropped to 6.7 and he weighed 32 pounds heavier due to the amount of fluid. What would cause the artery to come done?
Dear Michelle:It is unfortunate that your husband had to suffer such a complication. During any surgical procedure, in which general anesthesia is used, theĀ patient's blood pressure falls because of the medications used to maintain anesthesia. In persons with Hypertension, such as your husband, there sometimes is a sudden rise in the blood pressure after the effects of the anesthetic drugs have worn off. This sudden rise in blood pressure may be enough to dislodge any clips or other measures that were used as ligatures for blood vessels. This scenario is especially true in persons who have had high blood pressure for a long time and thus their arteries have been significantly damaged by the disease. |
