Dear Ask The Doctor: For 3 days now my stomach has been hurting really bad on the lower right side. It hurts when I move or take a deep breath or if I press on it. Advil or Motrin helps a little but it only lasts for a few hours then the pain comes back. Sometimes it hurts so bad that I double over and have to lay down. I don't have any other symptoms. I looked up the symptoms of appendicitis and the only one that I have is the pain on the lower right side. So could I still have it?
Dear Grace: Yes, you could still have appendicitis! You could also have one of several other conditions than can cause pain in the right lower abdomen in a teenage girl. Other conditions with similar symptoms include an ovarian cyst, infections of the fallopian tube, infections of intestines, kidney stones and urinary tract infections. I strongly suggest seeing your doctor since this pain has persisted for three days. All these conditions require prompt treatment to prevent the development of more serious complications. |
