Why does Appendicitis pain change location?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Why is pain from the appendix initially felt near the umbilical region? Also, why does the pain change location?
Dear Rosa: Thank you for your question. The pain from Appendicitis usually shifts location from the umbilical region early on to a more specific location of the pain in the right lower region of the abdomen due to the progression of the disease and inflamation. Initially the inflamation of the appendix causes irritation of the visceral peritonuem (layer in the abdomen) which leads to reffered pain to the umbilical area. As the disease progresses it then causes irritation of the parietal peritoneum which then localises the pain to the right lower abdominal area(McBurneys point) where the appendix lies |
