No surgery after ruptured appendix

Dear Ask The Doctor: When i was 13 years old my appendix ruptured( i will be 20 in a month). They waited to do the surgery and put me on antibiotics, I am guessing they were afraid of infection or I had an infection, I was released from the hospital due to a hurricane and went to one appointment after that and then never went back and got the surgery due to losing my insurance. I have not had any problems what so ever that have to do with my appendix(that i know of) I am curious on what the risk are of not getting my appendix removed?.? am I at risk for getting sick or getting some kind of disease?.?

Dear Shelby: You need not worry. Though, Ii is possible that your appendix could become inflamed again, there is no certainty that this will happen. There would be no need to remove your appendix now unless you develop symptoms that can be attributed to it.
