Increased Palpitations, Possible Heart Problem?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm young (19) and have never been diagnosed with a serious medical condition. I have always had sprouts of random heart palpitations, but assured myself that everyone gets them occasionally. However, within the past year the number of palpitations have increased, and the past few months, I have heart palpitations daily. I've noticed most of them happen when I'm laying down. Eating, drinking caffeine, and having even the smallest amount of sugar can set my heart into palpations for the rest of the night. I know the things I have just stated may trigger them, but I seem to have them even when I don't seem to do anything to provoke them. Should I get this checked out?
Dear Alyssa: Palpitations are usually not serious and is normal entity. However, an abnormal heart rhythm may need further investigation. Heart palpitations can be caused by anxiety, fear, caffeine, nicotine or anemia. Since you've mentioned that these palpitation are occurring frequently and without triggers, I would suggest you to see your doctor for further evaluation. Your doctor may advise an ECG and ECHO to help diagnose the cause of the palpitations. |
