Dear Ask The Doctor: Mother has severe degenarative arthritis and osteo. She is 90 years old, in a nursing home, takes 6 to 7 hydrocodone per day and has requested a scooter as walking has become intensly painful. Nursing home does allow scooters by the way. My sister (RN) is totally against scooter as she thinks mom should walk for as long as possible. Mother is very sociable and loves to participate in home activities but is electing to stay in room as too painful to walk. Please advise if scooter is bad choice. She IS 90. She has no other health issues. I would like her Very Golden years to be as pain free as possible. Thank you
Dear Becky: Considering the age and the severity of the degenerative bone changes, also the pain, I would recommend that your mother may walk as tolerated and use the scooter for the rest of the daily living activities that require moving from one place to another. |
