Chemotherapy effects on treating Bladder cancer

Dear Ask The Doctor: My husband aged 77 has been treated for bladder cancer with radiattion and chemotherapy. among the other side effects and after effects which we expected, he also has numbness (peripheral neuropathy) on the soles of his feet. Is this caused by the chemotherapy? What can be done to alleviate this?

Dear Marcia: Not all the drugs used for chemotherapy are able to cause neuropathy, only some of them, on the other hand the radiation therapy according to the number of sessions and potency of the beam, might cause certain nerve damage, but currently this has been minimized with the use of linear accelerators that direct the beam precisely where is the lesion located.
