Multiple boils at once, is it a cause for concern?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I see there are a couple of questions on a boil. My question is should I worry about having five boils at one time. I've been getting boils for years now ( on my inner thighs mostly and lower calf, so I know how to treat them. I've never had this many at one time.

Dear Amber: Most boils are caused by infection of the hair follicles with staphylococcal bacteria. Though most of the time these are formed due to trauma to the hair follicles and the entry of bacteria, however if there are recurrent boils, underlying problems such as diabetes, immunodeficient states, poor nutrition, poor hygiene and exposure to chemical irritants needs to be investigated by your doctor. Boils usually do not need immediate attention if you are in good physical health. If you are experiencing poor health and have developed a fever, a trip to the doctor of emergency is warranted.
