Red Painful Blotchy Lips after taking oxycodone

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am taking oxycondone 10mg for a spinal condition. Since taking it i have devolped red blotchy painful lips. I have tried many over the counter lip balms but am unable to get any relief from the pain and discomfort. Can you please tell me the cause and what to use to fix the problem and ease the pain. Thanking you.

Dear Dani: Oxycodone is an opiate that is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Some side effects caused by oxycodone include nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, sweating, headaches and red eyes. If you experience symptoms of swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips or breathing difficulties, it may mean that you are allergic to the medication. You will need to contact your doctor. Your doctor may need to prescribe you an alternative medication that does not have these side effects.
