Bloating: Common Causes and Foods to Avoid

Dear Ask The Doctor: Male: 41 For the past 3 months I have been suffering from bloating of the stomach. Its there all the time but worse after I've had something to eat. I dont feel hungry very often and my poo and flatulance is really smelly. My upper abdomen feels like its badly bruised. Also, my neck and shoulder joints really ache. I eat healthily, rarely drink and dont smoke.

The most common cause of bloating is usually constipation. Try to have a high fiber diet (vegetables and fruits) and drink lots of water to help with the bowel movements. Also avoid dairy products as this will produce lots of gas and will worsen the bloating. Some may experience abdominal pain in bloating because if the intestines get too dilated with gas, it can cause pain. Try having more of bananas and citrus fruits, these have high potassium content and will facilitate movement of the intestines. If the bloating really bothers you, you may consult a doctor to be sure there are no other serious underlying conditions (tumors). With the neck and shoulder joints, it can be caused by a lot of things: trauma, muscular strain. You may try taking over the counter pain relievers or have it massaged to relieve the pain. I do hope this helps. Take care always.
