Hydrochlorothiazide and Its Dangerous Side Effects

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a prescription for hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg tab Is it ok to take 2 in a 24 hour period if I seem excessively swollen?

The maximum daily dose of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is 50 mg daily. However, this drug effects as a diuretic (makes you lose water by urinating more), and together with losing water, potassium will be lost too. I would suggest consult your doctor first if you may increase the dose of HCTZ on an as needed basis (when you become excessively swollen). Your BP and potassium levels may need to be checked first before the dose can be increased. Hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels) is a common side effect of HCTZ. Mild levels of hypokalemia may cause weakness, and muscle cramps; moderate and severe levels, though, can have life-threatening consequences (heart rhythm disturbances). I wish you well always. Take care.
