Anal Itching, Do I have worms?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My anus has itched for about 3 weeks now and there are bumps on the inner lining and its those that itch. My stomach has also been cramped and bloated and gets more bloated when I eat. Also my stomach hurts when i press on it. I have had constant gas for the past weeks too. What is wrong with me? have been using cream on my anus but hasnt worked and my girlfriend thinks I have worms. Any ideas?

Dear Jeff: Even though worms can cause anal itching, there may be many more causes that needs to be investigated. Irritation of the anal mucosa from hot spicy food, infections with yeast and bacteria, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and diseases like Crohn's and psoriasis may all lead to anal itching. If the itching has not subsides with use of local anesthetic agents, you may need to get the area examined to rule out the conditions that I've mentioned above. Your doctor may also order a stool test to see for presence of infection, ova of parasites and worms. Antacids and medication like pantoprazole/omeprazole may help with symptoms of indigestion.
