Low Platelet Count Due to Immune Thrombocytopaenic Purpura

Dear Ask The Doctor: I got diagnosed it ITP 6 months ago, I'm a 23 year old female. I was told by my doctor to get my blood checked every 6 months. So, I just recently got it checked and my count was at 140,000. I know that is not a seriously low number and not any cause for me to need any special treatment. However, I wanted to know if I could get a tattoo, a small one, with my count that it's at now and/or with my disorder?

Dear Savannah: A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 and 450,000 per mm3, therefore your platelet count at 140,000 is just outside of the normal range. Treatment for low platelets is generally reserved for much lower platelet counts ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 if associated with active bleeding. A minor surgical procedure, or tattoo should not cause any problems with your platelet count at the current level, but there are other risks associated with tattoos including hepatitis infection. If you are concerned, I advise consulting with your haematologist.
