Dear Ask The Doctor: I broke my first metacarple 6 weeks ago i lost my insurance and cut off cast after 4 weeks i have stiffness in my first 2 fingers and a little swelling between my first 2 knuckles and cannot make a complete fist will all this go back to normal what can i do i cannot aford a doctor Dear Bryan: It seems your cast was removed prematurely as your fracture has not completely healed. You should do your best to avoid further injury to the hand. The swelling can be treated with ice to the area three times daily for about 15 mins each time. When the swelling resolves the stiffness will resolve as well and you should have full range of motion back. This process may take another 2 weeks. |
