Explosion pain when irrigating maxillar sinus

Dear Ask The Doctor: A MRI was performed on my face just recently and the result says that the nasala conchas are hypertrophic. It says that they are thick and made thick. In the two x-rays I,ve done after the irrigation it is clearly visible that the nasala conchas are much wider and thicker then they were before ( I compared with older x-rays of my self). The septum is also a lot thicker. What does that mean? Have they been damaged? Besides the hellish pain in my face, Ive been perfectly healthy after(and before) the irrigation. Whith kind regards Anita

Dear Anita: It seems you have a chronic rhinitits/sinusitis which simply chronic inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses. As this condition progresses the structures within the nose "thicken" narrowing the passage through which air passes and giving congested feeling. The chronic inflammation also cause significant pain. Irrigation is aimed at clearing the passage of any mucous to allow for more air to pass and reduce the congestion and pain. Antihistamines and painkillers often help in this condition.
