Dear Ask The Doctor:I recently broke my left leg in two places and one bone in my ankle. Today is day 7 my doctor told me tokeep my leg elevated and to stay off my feet. When I do have to get up my toes turn purple and where i broke my leg both feel really really cold almost like frost bite and I run a fever all day is any of this normal?
Dear Travis: It is not normal to have fever and this symptom suggest that there is possibly an infection in the broken limb. You should return to your doctor as soon as possible to investigate this possibility as the consequences of delay can be devastating. Elevating the leg allows the swelling in the limb to resolve so it is normal that when the limb is return to a normal position that blood "pools" giving the purple appearance of the toes. |
