Dear Ask The Doctor: Bone spurs how do they occur on the top of my foot and what should i do about them
Dear Brenda: Often the bone spurs occur as a consequence of a long term inflammation and pulling of a given tendon or muscle at their insertion on the bone. The causes are diverse, like: aging process, walking or running with inappropriate shoe gear on poor cushioned surface or changes in the walking or running routines. If currently you are not having pain or discomfort you do nothing about them, but if on the contrary you are experiencing pain it is recommended conservative treatment, meaning: muscle stretch of the leg and foot, using ice packs to decrease pain and inflammation, avoiding activities that reproduce the pain, use of anti-inflammatory medication and very important review your shoe gear. For those cases that do not respond to the conservative treatment, the corticosteroid injection on the site may be used and if still there is no significant improvement, Surgery might be considered. |
