Discoloration and swelling after ankle surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had ankle surgery (plates and screws) almost five weeks ago. I am still not able to bear weight but I was told I could rest it when I am standing. Well most times that I am up I notice my foot turns a little purple (its swollen which I know is normal). Is it normal for it to turn a little purple or discolored since all the blood is rushing down there? I can move it and and I am able to feel it. And it does not hurt. I go back to the dr Monday and plan to ask but I wasn't sure if I should be concerned...?? Also, when I start walking will this get worse? (swelling and discoloring) or would walking help circulate the blood...??

Dear Kristin: As you have rightly assumed, the discoloration you notice on standing is most likely a result of blood pooling in the limb. This is usually a temporary situation which resolves as the limb heals. It should be completely resolved by the time you are able to walk again.
