Dear Ask The Doctor: I am in recovery from Bell's Palsy. I contracted it on December 29th of last year. I have minimal numbness now. Just prior to contracting it I noticed that my face was always itchy and was sensitive to my even my hair touching it. The last few days this is happening again, is it coming back, or merely coincidence?
Dear Susan: Bell palsy is one of the most common neurologic disorders affecting the cranial nerves, and it is the most common cause of facial paralysis worldwide. Bells palsy is a condition that causes the facial muscles to weaken or become paralyzed. Symptoms such as a dry eye or tingling around the lips progress to classic Bell's. It is difficult for me to say whether your symptoms are due to recurrence of the disease. Occasionally symptoms may take a few days to be recognizable as Bells palsy. A warning sign may be neck pain, or pain in or behind the ear prior to palsy. |
