Dear Ask The Doctor: I had Cerabellar ataxia when i was 14 years old, I stopped talking, walking, writing, eating etc... Is there more chance of me getting it again when i have already had it once?
Dear Jade: It is difficult for me to tell whether your symptoms would recur again. Damage, degeneration or loss of nerve cells in the part of your brain that controls muscle coordination (cerebellum), results in loss of coordination or ataxia. Ataxia causes can include trauma to the head, stroke, transient ischaemic attack, chicken pox, multiple sclerosis, toxic reaction, tumor in the brain and some can be hereditary. There's no treatment specifically for ataxia. In some cases, treating the underlying cause resolves the ataxia. In other cases, such as ataxia that results from chickenpox or other viral infection, it's likely to resolve on its own over time. |
