Dear Connor: Arnold Chiari malformation is a condition in which the natrually occurring fluid in the brain is not reabsorbed as fast as it should be becuase a passage which normally allows for drainage of the fluid is blocked. This excess fluid causes an increase in pressure in the brain leading to headaches, weakness and other symptoms. It does not always cause symptoms but once symptoms develop surgery is usually required for relief. the surgery involves "widening" the passage to allow the fluid to drain appropriately. It may also involve placing a special tube to aid in drainage of the fluid. |
