Dear Ask The Doctor: When i was younger, i had a serious accident which resulted in a fractured skull and a clot of blood on my brain. I had to have surgery to remove this. The scar runs from the front of my ear, around the side of my head and finishes above my eye in the hair line. There is a lump there??? im unsure what this is? but i was wondering if you could tell me if there are any concerns to look out for when older? I pulled through the operation fine, they were all shocked as i was not expected to walk, talk have any hair etc. As i was so young, i would like learn more about what had happened to me. How can i go about this? But the main concern is to find out if i could have later effects in life? Thank you for you time!
Dear Nicola: You most likely suffered one of the following injuries: subdural heamtoma, epidural hematoma, brain contusion or some combination of the three. the first two are bleeding from blood vessels that run underneath the skull while a brain contusion can be cosidered a bruise on the brain. The surgery you had would have been to removed the clot of blood from the skull cavity. The most likely after effects of injuries like this is the development of seizures (epilepsy). The damaged area of the brain serves as a focus for the seizure activity to start. This may not develop for many years to come or may not develop at all. |
