Dear Ask The Doctor: The coil surgery was not successful on my mothers brain aneurysm today. what are the other options?
Dear Bonnie: One of three methods may be employed to treat brain aneurysm: careful observation, endovascular coil or open brain surgery wwith clipping of the aneurysm. Since a coil has been attempted and has not worked, the next step is open brain surgery and clipping of the aneurysm. Surgeons usually attempt less invasive techniques such as coiling before going on to major surgery. |
