Numbness Right side of face after Surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had two sebaceous cysts removed in March 2010 that were located behind my right ear. The surgery has left the lower half of my ear and part of the right side of my face numb. What would cause this numbness? Will I regain feeling again over time? Is this numbness able to be corrected with surgery?
Dear Maegan: The numbness you are experiencing is as a result of damage to the nerves supplying the skin over your right lower ear and face. This nerve was damaged when the sebaceous cyst was removed and is a recognized complication of that type of surgery. Unfortunately, there is no surgical procedure which can correct this numbness. You may regain some feeling in the that region as the nerve tissue regrows, however there is no guarantee that feeling will return. |
