Cafe au lait spots |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My otherwise healthy 5 year old daughter has 6-7 cafe au lait marks. can they be normal or from anything else besides neurofibromatosis? Dear Mary: I understand your worry about Café au lait spots on your daughter. Without doubt these macules are observed in 95% of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), which is the most frequently occurring neurocutaneous syndrome, however they can be found in other complex syndromes such as Fanconi’s anemia, McCune- Albright Syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, etc. Let me reassure you that freckling can mimic café au lait spots; I would suggest you to consult a pediatrician for a more detailed evaluation and diagnosis. I wish you the best. |
