Bell's Palsy Recovery: is there a Timeframe?

Dear Ask The Doctor: How long does it take to fully recover from Bell's Palsy?
Dear Natalia: It depends on the nerve damage initially, the nerves usually repair, in circumference, approximately 1 mm per day. It is very important for a speedy recovery that you begin facial exercises and stimulation of the facial muscles as soon as possible. These activities might accelerate your healing time. Relieve minor pain with over-the-counter pain medication such as “Motrin”.Taking Vitamin B complex helps to the nerve recovery. Keep your droopy eyelid taped shut at night. Keep your eye moist with proper eye drops to prevent drying of the surface of your eye. Electro stimulation of the muscles has been used for treatment, but its value is not proven. Steroids, such as prednisone, can reduce the duration of symptoms by decreasing the inflammation of the nerve. So as you see there is no pre-established timeframe, all depends on the severity of the initial injury, each patient in particular and the physical therapy received.
