Transient delay in motor responses on the left side of body

Dear Ask The Doctor: Since I can remember I have had a problem that I believe to be nervous system related. Sometimes, when I move very quickly from rest (like sprinting), the left half of my body will cease to function properly. It feels like the left side of my face drops, and I lose fine motor skills on that side. All of my muscles on my left side seem to stop responding well to my commands. Within a minute or so the symptoms are gone. This has never been a significant problem for me other than being inept at fast paced sports. I am curious, however, if this is something that is common and whether it has a name.
Dear Jeff: There are some published research studies about the delayed motor responses in patients with Parkinson disease; these suggest that there is a selective deficit of slowness in the motor readiness that is related to a degeneration of a part of the brain that controls the involuntary movements, but this delay in the motor response is not temporary or limited to the half of the body as you described is your case. If it is not a problem, as you said, and you have lived all these years with it, besides is not progressing, may be a constitutional feature, but if you are curious, you might get an evaluation by a neurologist. |
