Possible cervical strain sequel of a previous head trauma

Dear Ask The Doctor: A few months ago I had a terrible kidney infection that ended up having Ecoli in my bloodstream. As a result when I stood up too quickly I blacked out and hit my head on a concrete floor and ended up in the hospital for about a week. I feel fine now except my hands are tingly and numb feeling all the time. And when I barely look down I can feel the same sensation own my back and arms and the sensation gets worse in my hands. Especially on my ring finger and pinkie finger on both hands. When I was in the hospital they did a CAT scan and a MRI but said everything looked normal. This has been going on for about two months now. Is it a normal after effect of having a concussion and will it go away on it's own or could something else be wrong?
Dear Danielle: Most likely, according to your description of the events, you may be experiencing a cervical strain as a sequel of you head trauma, the severity of the trauma often is not correlated with the seriousness of the initial injury. Besides the tingling and numbness you might also have: neck or shoulder pain and muscle weakness of the arms. In the view that your imaging studies have come out negative, it may be useful to perform also an electromyography to rule out some other possible causes for the tingling and numbness sensation, for example: carpal tunnel syndrome or a nerve-muscle problem. |
