Dear Ask The Doctor: What does it meant to have a loss of aeration in the left petrous apex?
Dear Steven: Abnormal aeration of the petrous bone, which is located in the base of the skull as part of the temporal bone, may be responsible for some ear symptoms, balance and hearing problems. This is an incidental radiological finding. It has been reported that people with abnormal aeration at the petrous bone are more prone to develop complications such as: cholesterol granulomas, apicitis, giant air cell, but fortunately, the lesions of the petrous apex remain relatively rare. |
