Dear Ask The Doctor: For the past several months, occasionally when I try to make a fine motor movement, such as sliding my hand across a table or shrugging or shoulders, I've been making rather harsh jumps with my hands or twitches with my shoulders. Lately, these twitches have become more frequent and now include my legs and feet. Other possibly related symptoms I've been having are writing words in the wrong order, forgetting how to write certain things (Such as my own name.. I even spelled it wrong once) and forgetting how to write letters, like for example, one time I was writing my name and I knew what letters to write and in which order and I wrote from left to right, but I drew the letters from right to left (Like for the letter "N" I would have started with the upper-right corner rather than the left)... the letters were facing the correct direction but I couldn't for the life of me remember where I usually start to write the letters. Also, if I'm going someplace like class for example, I know I have to go inside the classroom, but when I get to the room I stand outside and have to think for a few minutes to remember if I'm supposed to be there or why I'm going there. Sometimes when I'm going to use a public restroom with a Mens room and Ladies room next to each other, I can't read the signs or recognize the little silhouettes of the little man or woman on the signs, and I have to wait until I see someone enter one of the rooms to know which I'm supposed to go into. Could I have a neurological problem or something? If so, does it could like it's serious? I'm male, 21 years old, about 5'9" and 130 lbs.
Dear Quinton: You have described motor problems along with cognitive issues, they may be or may be not related, and for sure these are going to require further assessment. I strongly recommend a thoroughly evaluation by a neurologist, because there are so many causes for movement disorders that may be related with cognitive problems, also it is important to rule out a family history of similar issues. |
