16 year old girl seeing ghosts?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can seeing white figures (16 year old girl) be a medical problem? She feels she is being chased by these white "ghosts". Very scared. Doesn't happen all the time. Can happen day or night. I am asking for my friend's daughter. Could this possibly be caused by hormones or mental or vision problems? Thank you.
