Dear Ask The Doctor: What is hyperattenuation in regards to the brain?
Dear Jennifer: The CT scanning gives us an image of the internal structures of the body by attenuation of the radiological signal by the tissues, so we get a picture of those structures by seeing in the film different densities. Hyperattenuation or also called Hyperdensity is a way to describe those areas that look more white and bright on the image, so they may indicate blood buildup if acute and calcium, artifacts (metal) or some tumors look like that.
