Dear Ask The Doctor: I have recently been very weak, sleeping all the time but then a few days ago I was sick a few times with a terrible headache. My partner noticed the right side of my lip was drooping so they took me to hospital. A CT and MRI scan are all clear but my lip is still drooping badly and is numb with occasional pins and needles. The doctors are not interested as the scans are clear, but am very self conscious and wonder if it will ever go away. Any advice much appreciated
Dear Jenny: Facial droop and pins and needles on the face can suggest a facial nerve involvement which may occur in either stroke or a space occupying lesion in the brain or it may be due to bells palsy or the affection of the facial nerve with herpes zooster virus. Since your scans were clear the first two are ruled out. Bells palsy is a condition in which there is affection of the facial nerve . It is a lower motor neuron condition in which there is facial muscle weakness with the inclusion of the forehead muscles along with pain /tingling or pins and needles in the area supplied by the nerve. Steroids have shown to be having some effect in treating this condition. All the best. |
