Dear Rajasekhar: According to your description, most likely you are experiencing the consequences of the inflammation across both sides of one level or segment of the spinal cord due to the previous viral infection, this possibly damaged the insulating substance (myelin) that covers nerve cell fibers causing the problems in the function of your legs; some people recover with minor or no residual problems while others may suffer permanent impairment that affects the ability to perform daily living activities. Like many other problems of the spinal cord, there is no cure for Transverse Myelitis once that the neurological damage has occurred. The treatment is aimed to manage and relieve the symptoms, which depend upon the severity of the initial nerve injury. The main treatment is Physical Therapy, and most Rehab programs include also Occupational therapy, Vocational therapy and mental health care professionals. Usually the recovery of Transverse Myelitis starts within 2 to 12 weeks of the onset of symptoms and may continue for up to two years, but if there is no significant improvement within the first 3 to 6 months the total recovery is unlikely. |
