Dear Ask The Doctor: My brother has been recently diagnosed with having Hydrocephalus (water on the brain). The doctor he went to gave him a prescription for Meclizine. After hearing about this, I immediately ran to my computer and looked up this drug on the internet. To my surprise, I found out that this drug is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. I do not understand why the doctor gave him this prescription because it does not say anything about treating hydrocephalus or fluid in the brain. Can you explain to me why the doctor would prescribe this medication to my brother?
Dear Alicia: Meclizine may be prescribed to prevent or treat nausea, vomiting, dizziness or lightheadedness, mainly for motion sickness but may be used in other conditions as well to treat these symptoms. However, its use for hydrocephalus may not be justified, and it would be best to obtain a second opinion to ensure the accuracy of treatment and prevent any complications.
