How long to take Phenytoin (Dilantin) after head surgery?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi doctor, My father is 82 years old. He had a brain surgery 11 days ago for a Chronic Subdural Hematoma. He has been taking Phenytoin 100 (Dilantin) since then. A general physician at the hospital (Unfortunately, very low standard one!) which he had the operation, prescribed 60 Capsules of Dilantin 100 (b.i.d) for him. Considering my father's health condition which has always been excellent, my question is; Does he really need to take Dilantin 100 for one full month? I am asking this because I haven't been able to contact his surgeon and I am a little doubtful about the decision of the General Physician in charge and also due to very poor post operation care my father received at that hospital. I really appreciate any help, Thank you so much.
Dear Nader: Dilantin is used to prevent seizures following a brain injury. The current recommendation is for seven days of medication following injury. So your father only needs to take Dilantin for one week. Scientific studies have not shown there to be any improved benefit of longer treatment.
