Deviated Uvula and Venous Malformation concern

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a Speech-Language Pathologist Grad. student, and upon examining my own structures for preparation of oral-peripheral exams, I noticed my uvula deviates to the left. I know this can be indicative of neurological damage. I'm curious, although no extreme symptoms have presented themselves, I have an extensive array of health issues. I suffered from migraines so badly a few years ago I saw a neurologist and had an MRI. They found a venous malformation- however, because it wasn't an AVM it was of no concern. My father died at age 46 of a malignant brain tumor in the brainstem. It this reason for concern, and if so, what necessary steps should I take?
Dear Katelyn: Even though you do not have at this time any other neurological symptom indicating a brain tumor, but you have positive family history, I strongly recommend you to get an evaluation by an ENT and neurosurgeon to rule out any other possible neurologic or organic cause for your uvula problem. I think this will give you peace of mind. |
