Possibility of Fibroadenoma developing into Breast Tumour

Dear Ask The Doctor: Dear Sir,Madam, I have just had a 3.5cm tumour removed from my right breast. Before the surgery I have had a biopsy done and I was told it was a fibroadenoma but it was better to remove it because there were slight upnormal cells that could be or develop into phyllodes cells. I know it was classified as a 3 before the surgery. I have had that tumour for the past 22 years, found it when I was 18 and it grew during the years. I was told that when it was taken out it broke in 2, didnt behave like a fibroadenoma, and also that the surgeon took out some surrounding tissue. She said it was soft inside. I would like to ask what is the probability for it to be cancer and if not what else could it be. Many Thanks for your help. Francesca
Dear Francesca: I do understand your concern. Although fibroadenoma is a long-term risk factor for breast cancer, the risk is increased in women with complex fibroadenomas, proliferative disease, or a family history of breast cancer. It is difficult for me to comment on the possibility that the lump could be cancerous. A biopsy of the lump is needed to rule out underlying cancer. |
